Burkhart Reclaimed Lumber

100 Years of History

The Verdi Penstock, operated successfully from 1909 to 2004, funned water in large wooden tubes from the High Sierra Mountains of Northern California into the Sierra Pacific’s generator, powering the Reno area for nearly 100 years.

When the penstock was replaced with newer technology, we dismantled it and it became our primary source of reclaimed lumber.

If you are looking for beautiful, unique wood with distinctive character and a story to tell, then you have come to the right place.

Old growth lumber is prized for its character, size, strength, and dense, straight grain. Each piece of wood from the penstock flume bears physical evidence of its years of use and the strength of its character.  Water from inside of the flume, and wind, rain, hail, snow, and sun from the outside have all played a role in creating the look of this beautiful product.  Metal strapping marks, notches, and other characteristics authenticate this wood as to its reclaimed nature, while enhancing its uniqueness.

Our product boasts beautiful, unique coloring, and a unique combination of beauty, history, and versatility.  This exceptional lumber has a deep and varied patina.  Its dense, sophisticated coloring is one of the many reasons why wood of this caliber is so heavily sought after.

Old-growth redwood is famously resistant to decay and weathering. Its history has provided one-of-a-kind character unobtainable with new wood, which makes it the perfect choice for an endless amount of applications.  From unique cabinets, doors, stairways, railings, mouldings, trim, open ceiling beams, wood beams, timber flooring, millwork, furniture, and other accessories, our lumber is perfect for anywhere that fine wood and attention to detail is required.
